Soil

The referal I have for good top soil (I haven't tried it yet) is A-1 soil. I understand that they are reliable and you can count on it being good:

A couple of years ago, I ordered a big load of top-soil from Evergreen and couldn't grow anything in it. Upon investigating, I found out that they are recycling various things and you don't know what you are getting. After about a year of leeching with water and doing soil tests and adding amendments, I am now able to grow ice plant in it and some other things. Now that I know, I will go get my soil from a reliable source.

I've had success with "Mel's Mix": equal parts peat moss, compost, and coarse vermiculite.

Gardening To-Do List: May

Water deeply from now until November. Study your sprinkling system and make adjustments (try putting in a drip system). Evaluate all your landscape generally as to what plants must go and what must stay. Mildew is a problem in May; if you are still growing peas, try dusting plants with sulfur at intervals of one week. If crop shows signs of slowing down, side-dress the row with vegetable fertilizer (don't overfertilize). Continue to plant summer crops. Staggering plantings you'll get longer harvest and more manageable quantities. Summer plantings - beets, carrots, chayote, corn, cucumbers, eggplant, green beans, lima beans, leaf lettuce, melons, New Zealand spinach, peppers, pumpkins radishes, summer squash, winter squash, swiss chard, tomatoes, turnips and herbs. Once beans and squash begin to bear, pick them daily to keep them coming. Many home gardeners plant herbs among vegetables to help keep pests away. Continue to tie up tomatoes growing on stakes. Pinch out suckers to maintain one or two main trunks per plant (if your tomatoes have ever suffered from early or late blight, it is better to grow them in cages or on stakes without pruning out the suckers - diseases can enter the plant through the pruning cuts). Continue to use organic methods to control pests and diseases on vegetables.
